Exodus of Venezuelans is approaching crisis, says UN agency

The exodus of immigrants from Venezuela is approaching a "crisis moment" comparable to the events involving refugees in the Mediterranean, the UN immigration agency said on Friday. Increasing numbers of Venezuelans are fleeing the economic crisis and political instability that shakes Venezuela, threatening to overload neighboring countries, including Brazil. Authorities from the region will meet in Bogotá next week to find a solution. This month, Ecuador and Peru have tightened the rules for Venezuelans to cross the border, requiring valid passports instead of just ID cards. In Brazil, residents of the town of Pacaraima in Roraima forced hundreds of Venezuelans to flee back to Venezuela.
Describing these cases as warning signs, UN International Organization for Migration (IOM) spokesman Joel Millman said funding and means to manage the exodus need to be mobilized.
"This is becoming a time of crisis that we have seen in other parts of the world, specifically in the Mediterranean," the spokesman told a news conference. On Thursday, IOM and the UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) called on Latin American countries to facilitate the entry of Venezuelans. UNHCR spokesman Andrej Mahecic said on Friday that governments in the region are making "commendable" efforts, even if some reception and service capacities are overburdened.
But "some disturbing images" have surfaced in the region in the last week. "These increase the stigma of those who are forced to flee, and also jeopardize efforts to integrate," he said. Venezuelan Information Minister Jorge Rodríguez said on Friday that a new package of economic measures aimed at combating hyperinflation will convince Venezuelans who have left the country to return.
